In keeping with the overall goal of Dahlem Konferenzen — to promote an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas and cooperation in research among international scientists — the Dahlem Workshop Report series was established to disseminate the results and ideas of each workshop to the scientific community at large. The series differs from other conference proceedings in several ways. Problem-oriented themes of the workshop as well as state-of-the-art summaries on the key topics are presented, with an emphasis given to the perceptions, open questions, and existing controversies in the field. Perspectives taken at the workshop are distilled in the group reports, where the identification of future research directions are highlighted. An extensive review and editorial procedure ensures a cohesive volume.
