Lipreading for Robust Automatic Speech Recognition

Nearly all of the crisis points in 2001 occur in silence; the most chilling comes when HAL lipreads Dave and Frank in the pod as they discuss plans to disconnect him. This chapter discusses the current status of speechreading ("lipreading") for improved speech recognition.

While HAL's performance in silence is far beyond current technology, computer speechreading systems using both image and sound perform better than their conventional "blind" counterparts, especially in noisy environments. Deaf, and even hearing humans, speechread, and fascinating illusions such as the McGurk illusion reveal much about how humans integrate sight and sound for speech recognition.
