Donald A. Norman, Apple Computer, Inc. The Cognitive Science Society, Inc. |
Donald A. Norman is vice president of advanced technology at
Apple Computer and professor emeritus at the University of California,
San Diego, where he was founding chair of the Department of Cognitive
Science. He was also one of the founders of the Cognitive Science
Society and has served as its chair and editor of its journal,
Cognitive Science. He is a fellow of the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences and received an honorary degree from the University
of Padua (Italy). "The technological problems today," says Norman,
"are sociological and organizational as much as technical. In this new
age of portable, powerful, fully communicating tools, it is ever more
important to develop a humane technology, one that takes into account
the needs and capabilities of people." Norman is the author of twelve
books, which have been translated into twelve languages. His most
recent publications -- The Design of Everyday Things, Turn
Signals Are the Facial Expressions of Automobiles, and
Things That Make Us Smart -- are collected together on a
Voyager CD-ROM entitled Defending human attributes in the age of
the machine. The set includes video talks, demonstrations,
collected papers, and even examination questions.
