Joseph P. Olive, department head of the Text-to-Speech Research
Department at Bell Laboratories of Lucent Technologies, works on
linguistics, processing, prosody (melody, timing, and loudness), and
sound generation. The synthesizer resulting from this work is capable
of speaking English, Chinese, Spanish, German, French, Russian,
Italian, Romanian, and Navajo; it has been on display at the AT&T
exhibit at the Epcot Center since its opening. He holds degrees in
music theory and composition, as well as physics, from the University
of Chicago. He received a grant from the National Endowment for the
Arts and was named a distinguished member of technical staff at Bell
laboratories. He holds several patents in text-to-speech processing
and has written numerous articles in this and related fields,
including Acoustics of American English Speech. His opera,
Mar-ri-ia-a, has been performed at the Carnegie Recital Hall
and elsewhere.
