Roger C. Schank holds faculty appointments as John Evans
Professor of Computer Science, Education, and Psychology at
Northwestern University, where he is also director of the Institute
for the Learning Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from the
University of Texas and was formerly professor of computer science and
psychology at Yale University and director of the Yale Artificial
Intelligence Project. A leader in the field of artificial
intelligence, natural-language understanding, and multimedia-based
interactive training, his work stresses the value of learning from
experts, developing skills rather than perfecting routines, and
applying the benefits of "just-in-time" training.
Schank serves as the president of the Learning Sciences Corporation,
formed in partnership with Northwestern University to market the
software initially developed at the Institute for the Learning
Sciences. He is author or coauthor of numerous books, including
Tell Me a Story, The Creative Attitude, The Cognitive Computer: On
Language, Learning, and Artificial Intelligence, Dynamic Memory: A
Theory of Learning in Computers and People, Scripts, Plans, Goals and
Understanding: An Inquiry Into Human Knowledge Structures, and
Inside Case-Based Explanation.
