1969: Bauhaus: Weimar, Dessau, Berlin, Chicago

We’re featuring Hans Wingler’s Bauhaus: Weimar, Dessau, Berlin, Chicago for day 9 of our 50th anniversary series.

Matthew, a bookseller at William Stout Books writes, “Over the years, the Hans Wingler book has been the best selling book on the Bauhaus at William Stout Architectural Books, and the first one we hand to people asking about the subject.”

Kirkus reviewed Bauhaus in September 1969. Here’s an excerpt from the review:

“This monumental volume constitutes, in effect, a portable archive of the institution/idea from its antecedents through its most direct descendants. An introductory ‘origin and history’ recounts the internal tensions and external pressures that shaped this unique attempt to apply craft techniques to industrial technology, and to approach both via a fundamental grounding in art.”
