Each academic year the Massachusetts Institute of Technology grants approximately three hundred and fifty doctoral degrees, which are the result of many years of study and research on the part of the degree candidates. The product of this study is the doctoral dissertation – a piece of original research into a particular and well-defined problem – completed in conformance with the high standards of M.I.T. and the academic community in general.
Abstracts of Theses is a collection of abstracts from doctoral dissertations written in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy and Doctor of Science at M.I.T. each year. As almost all fields of science, engineering, and the social sciences are represented, this series of volumes should be of interest to organizations and institutions engaged in research, libraries of colleges and universities, and groups supporting private research.
Included with the abstracts are the names of each candidate's thesis supervisor, comprising some of the best-known people in their respective fields; the length of the dissertation; information on where and how to order copies on the complete dissertation and the cost. In short, this series provides a key for easy access to some of the most recent research being done at M.I.T.
