Celebrating University Press Week 2019

The MIT Press is proud to support and participate in 2019 University Press Week (UP Week), from Sunday, November 3, through Saturday, November 9.

This year’s theme—”Read. Think. Act.”—perfectly encapsulates the work of the Press, as well as the ambition for our books in the world.

Read. Think. Act. emphasizes the role that scholarly publishers can play in moving national and international conversations forward on critical and complex issues. It is a particularly apt theme as many citizens around the globe continue to engage in important debates that will influence vital decision-making in the months ahead. In fact, this year’s UP Week will begin exactly one year to the day before the 2020 Election Day in the U.S.

The university press community will host online celebrations of this year’s theme via a blog tour, which we’ll be linking to throughout the week. On Thursday, our own MIT Press Bookstore will contribute to the conversation with a thoughtful take on how bookstores—and in particular university press-affiliated bookstores—help build community.

Want to learn more about University Press Week? This Read. Think. Act. Reading List is a great starting and highlights a lot of the important work of our peers and colleagues.

We’re honored that the MIT Press title selected for this list is Jonas Staal’s Propaganda Art in the 21st Century, which offers an essential guide for understanding propaganda art in the post-truth era, reminding us that propaganda is not a relic of a totalitarian past but occurs today even in liberal democracies. This illuminating and timely book discusses artistic and cultural productions developed by such popular mass movements of the twenty-first century as Occupy, activism by and in support of undocumented migrants and refugees, and struggles for liberation Mali, Syria, and other countries.

Did you know: University presses publish approximately 14,000 books each year, as well as more than 1,200 journals and numerous innovative digital works.
