MIT Press journals take top two spots in linguistics with 2021 impact factors

Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics and Computational Linguistics rank as the number one and number two journals in the field of linguistics based on impact factors

Transactions of the Association for Computational Linguistics and Computational Linguisticstwo MIT Press journals dedicated to the computational and mathematical properties of language—ranked as the first- and second-most impactful journals, respectively, in the field of linguistics for 2021 based on the annual journal citation report measuring impact factors.

Journal impact factors, announced each year by global analytics company Clarivate Analytics, measure recent citation activity for scholarship published by a given journal. The 2021 report marks the first-ever impact factor for Transactions, with an impact factor of 9.194. Computational Linguistics earned an impact factor of 7.788.

“We thank the whole TACL community for their active engagement—authors who have chosen to submit their best work to the journal, as well as our fantastic roster of action editors and standing reviewers who have committed themselves to providing the highest quality feedback,” said Brian Roark and Ani Nenkova, coeditors-in-chief of Transactions. “This virtuous cycle of high quality review and author choice of venue has led over the years to the quality now reflected in the journal’s impact factor, and for that we must acknowledge all the people who put in the hard work.”

Hwee Tou Ng, editor-in-chief of Computational Linguistics, said that the journal’s latest impact factor “reaffirms the high quality of the papers published in the journal.”

“I would like to thank the natural language processing community for continuing to submit their impactful papers to the journal,” Ng continued. “I would also like to thank the editorial team (action editors, book review editor, squibs editor, standing and other invited reviewers, and editorial assistant) for their dedicated service, which enables the journal to achieve a fast turnaround time.”

Other MIT Press journals performed well amongst their peers:

“We’re thrilled by the impact factors earned by our journals for 2021,” said Nick Lindsay, MIT Press Journals & Open Access Director. “We are so proud of the editorial teams, and are honored to be able to facilitate the publication of such rigorous scholarship.”
