Cognitive science journal Open Mind to be cofunded by Harvard Library and MIT Libraries through 2027 in an effort to advance open access publishing

The MIT Press, Harvard Library, and MIT Libraries champion scholar-led open access publishing with Open Mind, a venue for quality research in cognitive science

The MIT Press is pleased to announce that cognitive science journal Open Mind will be cofunded by Harvard Library and MIT Libraries now through 2027. Open Mind is the first journal to be supported by the Harvard Open Journals Program, announced earlier this year to advance and sustain no-fee open access scholarly publishing.

The funding partnership reflects a common goal amongst all three organizations—the MIT Press, Harvard Library, and MIT Libraries—to champion scholar-led open access publishing that is free from reader- and author-facing charges.

“Together, we hope to secure the future of Open Mind as an exemplary no-fee open access journal and to demonstrate the power of cooperative funding,” said Colleen Cressman, Librarian for Open Publishing at Harvard Library and manager of the Harvard Open Journals Program.

Open Mind provides a venue for the highest quality, most innovative work in cognitive science, offering free open access publishing, concise and accessible articles, and quick turnaround times for authors. The journal, first launched in 2017, covers a broad array of content areas within cognitive science, using approaches from cognitive psychology, computer science and mathematical psychology, cognitive neuroscience and neuropsychology, comparative psychology and behavioral anthropology, decision sciences, and theoretical and experimental linguistics.

“We’re proud to collaborate with MIT Press and Harvard Library to further our common goals,” said MIT Libraries Director Chris Bourg. “This investment is part of an ongoing strategy of MIT Libraries and one of several such investments we have made in the past six years to advance more open and equitable scholarly publishing.”

Open Mind is edited by Edward Gibson, Professor of Brain & Cognitive Sciences at MIT, and Samuel J. Gershman, Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. Although a young journal in the field, Open Mind has a history of leading the field in open access publishing. With funding from the MIT Libraries the MIT Press moved Open Mind to a diamond open access publishing model in 2022, eliminating all article processing fees for scholars and providing free access for readers and researchers alike.

“The collaboration between Harvard Library, MIT Libraries, and the MIT Press represents a strong commitment to publishing the best scholarship for the broadest audience possible,” said Nick Lindsay, Director of Journals and Open Access at the MIT Press.
