    Engaging the histories of art, architecture, and design, Leonor Antunes reflects on the functions of everyday objects, contemplating their potential to be materialized as abstract sculptures. She investigates the values and ideas embedded in things as well as in vernacular traditions and craft. Over the last two years, the artist has researched postwar figures active in Venice, Milan, and Turin who had a predominant role in postwar reconstruction as well as how craftsmanship traditions, associated with particular forms of knowledge and making, intersect with this history. Accompanying Antunes's exhibition in the Portuguese Pavilion at the 58th Venice Biennale, a seam, a surface, a hinge, or a knot features texts by Briony Fer, Suzanne Cotter, Ana Teixeira Pinto, and curator João Ribas, as well as an artist's project of approximately twenty die-cut sheets based on drawings in the archive of Egle Trincanato, an architect, writer, photographer, and curator who worked in Venice.

    In the Holocene is based on a 2012 group exhibition of the same name at the MIT List Visual Arts Center that explored art as a speculative science, investigating principles more commonly associated with scientific or mathematical thought. Through the work of an intergenerational group of artists, the exhibition and book propose that art acts as an investigative and experimental form of inquiry, addressing or amending what is explained through traditional scientific or mathematical means: entropy, matter, time (cosmic, geological), energy, topology, mimicry, perception, consciousness, et cetera. Sometimes employing scientific methodologies or the epistemology of science, other times investigating phenomena not restricted to any scientific discipline, art can be seen as a form of inquiry into the physical and natural world. In this sense, both art and science share an interest in knowledge, realism, and observable phenomena, yet are subject to different logics, principles of reasoning, and conclusions.

It undertakes a transdisciplinary history at the nexus of art history, science studies, and philosophy, exploring the role the exhibition played in the construction of the conceptual categories of modernity, and outlines a historiographical model that conceptualizes the exhibition as both an aesthetic and an epistemic site.
