Emily Weinstein and Carrie James’s Behind Their Screens with Linda Charmaraman

September 12, 2022 @ 5:30 pm 6:30 pm

In Behind Their Screens: What Teens Are Facing (and Adults Are Missing) authors Emily Weinstein and Carrie James, Harvard researchers who are experts on teens and technology, explore the complexities that teens face in their digital lives, and suggest that many adult efforts to help—“Get off your phone!” “Just don’t sext!”—fall short.

What are teens actually doing on their smartphones? Contrary to many adults’ assumptions, they are not simply “addicted” to their screens, oblivious to the afterlife of what they post, or missing out on personal connection. They are just trying to navigate a networked world.

Copies of Behind Their Screens will be available for purchase on site.

Emily Weinstein is a Research Director at Project Zero at Harvard and a Lecturer at the Graduate School of Education.

Carrie James is a sociologist and Principal Investigator at Project Zero at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. She is the author of Disconnected: Youth, New Media, and the Ethics Gap (MIT Press). The authors’ work has been covered in Time, the Boston Globe, the Washington Post, and the Atlantic, and they are sought-after speakers on teens and technology.

Weinstein and James will be in conversation with Linda Charmaraman, a senior research scientist at the Wellesley Centers for Women and director of the Youth, Media & Wellbeing Research Lab. Her research interests include technology and adolescent health, digital citizenship, innovative research methods to include overlooked and hidden populations, and how social identities (e.g., gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, political affiliation) affect wellbeing.
