The grants expand funding for authors whose work brings diverse and chronically underrepresented perspectives to scholarship in the arts, humanities, and sciences
Today, the MIT Press announced the first recipients of the Grant Program for Diverse Voices. Launched in 2021 to expand funding for authors whose experience and knowledge of diverse communities informs books that meet the highest standards of peer reviewed scholarship, the initiative provides support for the research and writing of new works.
“The MIT Press has a proud legacy of bold, socially engaged publishing that champions the sharing of information and ideas from diverse perspectives,” says Amy Brand, director and publisher, the MIT Press. “As part of our enduring commitment to diverse voices and perspectives, we are proud to support these authors with grants to support the preparation and publication of their work.”

- Reparative Media: Cultivating Stories and Platforms to Heal Our Culture by Aymar Jean “AJ” Christian
- Our Queer Universe: Deconstructing Definitions, Producing Particle Beams, and Examining Entangled Identities by Jessica Esquivel
- Jardineros/Gardeners: Cultivating Los Angeles’ Front Lawn with Brown Hands, Migrant Networks, and Technology by Álvaro Huerta
- A Candle in the Cosmos: Henrietta Swan Leavitt and the Extraordinary Legacy of Her Luminous Universe by Leila McNeill
- An Anthology of Blackness: The State of Black Design edited by Terresa Moses and Omari Souza
- Canceled: How Smartphones and Social Media Democratized Public Shaming by Allissa Richardson
- Emergent Economies of Art and Technology: Temporalities and Aesthetics of Art and Practice by Ashley Lee Wong

The Grant Program for Diverse Voices supports new or returning authors from diverse backgrounds. Grants can support a variety of needs, including research travel, copyright permission fees, parental/family care, developmental editing, and other costs associated with the research and writing process.
