New Scientist Live: Body Am I, Moheb Costandi

October 9, 2022 @ 1:45 pm 3:30 pm

The way we perceive our bodies is closely tied to the way we think of our selves, but is not always accurate. Mismatches between the two underlie a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric conditions, including anorexia, body dysmorphia, phantom limbs, and a rare condition called body integrity identity disorder, which makes individuals want to amputate a perfectly healthy limb. Join Moheb Costandi as he reveals modern research into the mechanisms of bodily awareness which sheds new light on such conditions, opening up new avenues for treatment. He’ll discuss how this research is making us rethink the nature of consciousness in humans and other animals.
