Open Access Edition of John Palfrey’s Intellectual Property Strategy Launches on PubPub

Intellectual Property Strategy by John Palfrey is now available as an Open Access edition on the PubPub platform.

Published in 2011 as an inaugural title in the MIT Press’ Essential Knowledge series, Intellectual Property Strategy is now one of the first MIT Press titles to release as an open, CC-licensed edition on PubPub, an open authoring and publishing platform initially developed at the MIT Media Lab. The new edition of Intellectual Property Strategy on PubPub includes embedded points for discussion to encourage engagement within the PubPub community. Palfrey’s new questions take into consideration current events and changes in the field since the book was first published in paperback. In addition, the advent of the PubPub platform has made it possible for the MIT Press to offer several interviews and case studies together with the book’s full text. This supplemental content was previously only available in an enhanced iPad edition of the book.

“I am very grateful to the MIT Press and the MIT Media Lab for their partnership in making Intellectual Property Strategy available as an open access title. I am excited about the PubPub platform as a means by which the ideas in this book might reach a wider audience. I also love the potential for interactivity…PubPub offers the promise for a new mode of book publishing and a new era of engagement between authors and readers,” says John Palfrey, Head of School at Phillips Academy (Andover).

“I’m delighted we’re now able to make Palfrey’s Intellectual Property Strategy openly available on PubPub. As a mission-driven publisher, the MIT Press is constantly striving to strike the right balance among accessibility, quality, and sustainability. This is a great example of our pursuit to provide the widest possible access to important, seminal works published by the MIT Press,” says MIT Press Director Amy Brand.

PubPub socializes the process of knowledge creation by integrating peer review, conversation, and annotation into short- and long-form digital publication. As a web-based reader equally adaptable for mobile or desktop use, PubPub makes available OA journals and books, along with their annotations and discussions as publicly accessible data, allowing countless applications, visualizations, and analysis tools to be developed around the pulse of community participation. Readers are able to author new conversations, curate new and existing texts to create their own novel perspectives, and participate with peers and broader public communities through a collaborative system with multiple options for privacy and filtering.

Among the MIT Press projects now on PubPub are Frankenbook, an interactive edition of Frankenstein: Annotated for Scientists, Engineers, and Creators of All Kinds (MIT Press, 2017) and the Journal of Design and Science (JoDS), which forges new connections between science and design and breaks down the barriers between traditional academic disciplines.

About the MIT Media Lab:

Actively promoting a unique, antidisciplinary culture, the MIT Media Lab goes beyond known boundaries and disciplines, encouraging the most unconventional mixing and matching of seemingly disparate research areas. It creates disruptive technologies that happen at the edges, pioneering such areas as wearable computing, tangible interfaces, and affective computing. Today, faculty members, research staff, and students at the Lab work in 25 research groups on more than 350 projects, from digital approaches for treating neurological disorders, urban agriculture for sustainable cities, to advanced imaging technologies that can “see around a corner.” The Lab is committed to looking beyond the obvious to ask the questions not yet asked whose answers could radically improve the way people live, learn, express themselves, work, and play.
