This week the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences to Angus Deaton “for his analysis of consumption, poverty, and welfare.” Last year Professor Deaton and nine other distinguished economists offered their visions of the future in In 100 Years. In the following excerpt from the book, Deaton predicts the future of health.

Jürgen Habermas, one of the world’s most distinguished living philosophers and social critics, has been named co-winner of the John W. Kluge Prize for Achievement in the Study of Humanity.

Last week, the Iranian-born Maryam Mirzakhani became the first woman ever to win the Fields Medal, widely seen as the highest scholarly honor in mathematics. Mirzakhani , who is on the Stanford University faculty, was cited for her work making connections among the fields of topology, geometry, and dynamical systems.
